Rape, Suicide and Movies: A Reality Check!

I should say the movie Ravanan is the reason why I am writing this. I could not help but lose myself in thought after watching the movie. One thing really got me hooked, obviously the movie was worth watching and beautiful and all but that is not what I am talking about. There is a character played by Priyamani in the movie, they introduce her character as a strong woman who is protagonist’s sister. A few scenes later she commits suicide after having being gang-raped by Police men. At this point I wondered why the directors or rather script writers decide that a woman should commit suicide once she gets raped, does that really necessary to prove that she is a quintessential woman. Is it all for chastity or virginity the women live for?? May be some script demands that she ought to die but here it was not. Is not his younger sister getting raped a big enough reason for the protagonist to fight against the Police and kidnap commissioner’s wife?? I must say I was disappointed with the way Maniratnam and Suhasini treated the character.

Why is it like rape victims commit suicide in all the Indian movies we watch, well there are a very few exception. But don’t directors have social commitment to make the society better??? We cannot prevent the psychic men from committing rape but we obviously can motivate women to fight against this injustice. I am not asking all the directors to stop making entertainment only movies and turn to social movies which are meant to have an impact on people’s lives, that won’t really help because the mass seldom watch such movies. But I am asking to stop killing the rape victims if it does not really affect the flow of the story. If we keep doing like what we are doing, no doubt that an innocent woman getting raped would not think about anything but suicide, do we really want it that way?? Do we really want them to pay their life only because some antisocial psychic pricks find happiness in this bloody act?? I would rather say we don’t. We ought to do whatever it takes to stop the atrocities like rape from happening but we also need to be prepared for the worst. What if it happens? Should or should not the victim live?? We know how hard it will be for her to come back to a normal life, it may take a few years but I believe a human life is worth the suffering. I don’t know what can we do to bring them back but I really can say we should change our attitude towards the rape victims; they are no material for a tea time laugh for that they have not done anything wrong, they only suffered.

I don’t believe women commit suicide because they believe it’s not worth living if they are sexually assaulted but its more because of the insult they will have to take when this goes public. So we should do whatever it takes to keep them away from public eyes but at the same time we should find ways to prevent women from exploiting this benefit to trap innocent men, because I think if they have nothing to lose a few woman may be willing to file sexual assault complaints to take revenge on men they have personal problem with and also there is the possibility of crooked men taking advantage of this situations for business or personal benefits. All I hope is we will do whatever we can do, without putting too much effort, to make the life easier for everyone. I hope directors will also.

  1. dude,
you have touched upon a social evil and thats great.. initially i kind of felt that u were simply critical of women commiting suicide when they have been raped without touching on the subject of rape..

And i was also hoping you give a solution for this.. needn't be a perfect one, but a solution.. But you ended with a para which talked about the exact human nature which is causing all these problems. The Human nature to exploit anything to his or her own benefit..

And dude, u said u dont agree with women committing suicide in movies.. but what are u suggesting? the other option in front of them is to live a ridiculed life in front of a society that treat them in the lowest possible way.. What the directors are doing is kind of a mercy killing.. So until and unless the society change, i don't think the situation is going to change much..

  2. I have written the solution initially but opted to remove it because i felt there should be proper planning on it and experts should do it. I suggest we set up a rehabilitation center for victims of such atrocities, more of a secret stuff and prepare them to face the worst. And I am sure that if they relocate and find another job and all they can get out of this and live an almost normal life. And you know everything good comes with a price, we cannot totally change the society with a flip but still then I am against women committing suicide just because they are assaulted.. and these movies inject this thought in them nothing else. We can start from the basics.. first change thoughts and then change actions

  3. Nice to see you start posting :)
And a nice subject to start with.. As always i like to add some perspective and criticism (i think i have an obsession for criticizing you :D meanwhile i agree with whatever you wrote.. jus adding mine )

India is one of the top most countries while considering suicide rate and South india is topping in that too. So the root problem is not just suicide after a rape but suicide as a whole. Indian population has a very long gestation period for becoming free and independent and girls seldom has this opportunity too. So as we are always under the protection and care of parents most are unaware of the realities of life. Thus with a very feeble psychic the chances for committing suicide under pressure is high and nonetheless rape is extremely traumatizing and depressing.

Anyway film makers always had this funny way of depicting sexuality like with one sex the girl always get impregnated; compulsory sex in first night; suicide after sex etc..
So its a cliche in the normal film industry..

And coming to whether a girl really have to commit suicide after being raped, comes the underlying social situations prevailing in india. Indian society has the concept of 'religion' well rooted in them. And all religion though are against rape (which is deep inside the book ) all emphasize on the chastity of woman (which is very evident in almost all religious books). This makes the society to give a contemptuous look on the girl because at the end of the day 'its all girl's fault'.. So rather than changing personal attitudes i guess its the religions that should evolve and try to put forward the relevant rather than the irrelevant..

NB: There are films in malayalam like 'panchangni' and 'azhakiya ravanan' where rape has got another storyline..

  4. Well said dude.. But i beg to disagree on the religious part you wrote.. its not the religion but the followers who use religion as pretext to pervert any rule fore their convenience..

I wish if all people who talk about India becoming a great power and foreseeing a better future did whatever they could in some way or the other we would have been socially far improved.. leave the economy as it has something to do with the government as well

  5. Hashi Good to see you here :) great thoughts ..I agree with you...
Nikhi..dei super daaaaa.. nicely presented ...I have disagreement though :)
Let me share some scattered thoughts :)

As per official records INDIA is 44th in Suicide rates and not in the TOP 50 for % for rape

rates :) see the below links:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_suicide_rate
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rape_statistics

Still we know there are startling no. of cases.(and there should be a lot that are hidden-is this reduce the numbers?) or the definition of rape is different across countries !!. Definitely our population is more serious about the purity of women and anything points against it is met with lift of eyebrow.

See we have movies showing woman treated as a criminal when she kills the demon trying to rape
her!. They are realistic movies and they should not be regarded or mixed with entertainment movies.

Be it our films or media instead of glorifying the commonplace/act of normal value they will understand the need for proclaiming the real virtue and acheivements of human life.

  6. Ok wait a minute.. Lets see the facts..

Suppose a woman falls victim, how would her family see her?
They see her as an outcast(except for the parents.. in certain cases even the parents).. Is there any way this mindset can be changed?? Now, its a tricky question.. because our answer would be yes, but we answer it as an outsider.. Its always easy to pass judgement on things not concerning one.. Seriously, i dont see this present society changing their mindset.. Its imprinted in their past, their history, that the women who has fallen victim is a cursed one.. But do we have any hope?? now there we have a solid answer.. Yes.. we do.. Because we can change the mindset of younger generation, there may come a time when its them who are subjected to this particular decision making and they would see it differently as we or our past generations did.. Meaning, we can mould a radical and rational thinking society..

Second question, can the woman lead a normal life in a society that identifies her as a victim?? (this question has many levels.. not just rape victims.. hijadas, people with varied secual orientations.. etc.. the fringe society)..

No.. in the present scenario they cant.. why? one, there are people who dont want her working with them..(harmless haters) And there are people who taunt and ridicule her and make life difficult for her(harmful perverts)..

Is there a way to over come this?? yes.. one, we can either wait for the rational generation to take over.. But that will take a long time.. so what do we do for now?? It is possible that certain social service society(society must work undercover) can be set up.. who can remove the girl from society's eyes and enable her to lead a life in a place where people dont recognize her..

I think its like all social evils.. inter-religion marriage, gay or lesbian marriage, the way we see hijadas, etc... etc... these things can change.. But it requires a mass upheaval of the society, which i dont think would be possible.. You can keep on saying, "it takes a collection of drops to become an ocean and lets be the drop..".. But untill you have enough drops, it isnt going to make a difference.. I think it should start like this.. like how u have done.. u have made these people who have read this think about it.. influenced us.. similar everyone can influence the people around them.. change those minds which we can.. and hope that the drops we collect would indeed sum up to be an ocean which washes away all these evils...
